Black Rock Oceanfront Resort is quietly nestled onto the ocean cliffs of Ucluelet – a perfect mix of nature and comfort. Weddings, elopements, and engagements are also part of the landscape! The Resort is on the west side of Vancouver Island, not far from famous Tofino surfing spots. Couples searching for the wildness of private beaches and forests can find all that and more. The natural scenery is showcased in a modern style. Practical matters are not forgotten as large suites, with full kitchens, are available for all your family and friends.

And ‘pet-friendly’ is probably too mild for the service your pets receive – more like a ‘pet lover’s’ venue! Dog biscuits greet canine guests at the front counter with lots of love. Plus, it’s a perfect storm of trails for doggy walks! And the wedding planners here are experts with pets, even providing a pet babysitting service.

Upon entering Black Rock Resort, the first impression is the fascinating modern architecture – an ocean inlet circles the main lobby. Stepping out onto the glass balcony, complete with a fire pit, is quite an awe-inspiring way to watch the spectacular sunrises and sunsets. It is also the first glimpse of many ceremony spots within the resort. We were assured they would make your ceremony happen wherever your fancy strikes you in or around the property! Balconies, beaches, rocks, decks…all fair game.

The favorite spot at Black Rock for ceremonies, elopements, and private dinners is the Wine Cellar. As you step down the winding staircase (dramatic bridal entrance!), you are met with a glass wall looking out over the ocean inlet. Evening ceremonies filled with candlelight are the perfect fit for the West Coast décor in this venue space. You can wed on the balcony or just inside the glass wall. At approx 935 sq ft you can have up to 45 guests.

The Fetch Patio is set over the ocean cliffs and offers an open-air option for elopements or larger receptions. The iconic Black Rock Wedding shot is taken at the end of the Fetch Patio. After the ceremony, guests can enjoy a cocktail reception (and the view!) while mingling.

The 2000 sq ft Rainforest Ballroom is the more traditional choice for larger receptions and can hold up to 120 guests. You can have your ceremony anywhere on the property and then retire with your guests to this space to dance the night away. The room can also be split into the Hemlock and Sitka rooms. Black Rock Resort provides audio/visual, a portable bar, lighting, and a dance floor.

Gourmet cuisine is another perk to Black Rock – chefs are happy to plan your culinary event with guests in mind. West Coast ingredients and décor are showcased and add to the entire experience. Before and after your event, the resort offers a lovely little coffee shop in the lobby and two restaurants. Float Lounge is perfect for eating casually and knocking back cocktails while admiring the view. Fetch Restaurant offers gourmet cuisine, but be sure to reserve.

One thing you do not have to worry about is the planning of your special event. Black Rock Resort has extremely experienced wedding designers on hand. They know where to get anything you wish for and can put together whatever occasion you celebrate – including proposals! The resort averages three monthly proposals and hundreds of weddings, elopements, honeymoons, etc., every year.

Black Rock Oceanfront Resort has suites and accommodations to suit any grouping, but, more importantly, they have full kitchens in their suites. The view from the balconies is unparalleled. You can watch the sunrise while listening to the ocean waves or sip a glass of wine while watching the sunset. Really it doesn’t matter the time of day – it’s just a fantastic set of windows to look through. The suites are modern simplicity with fireplaces and bathrooms as large as most bedrooms. The rain shower in each suite is a work of art, honestly! On top of all this, the hot tubs and pool are on the edge of a cliff hanging over the ocean. You won’t soon forget the experience of sitting in a hot tub listening to the waves crash below. Not to be forgotten is the Drift Spa, which offers massages and facials using natural elements such as black rocks and seaweed flora.

Photographers get pretty excited when you book them to shoot your wedding, for good reason! The black rock photos with the sun setting behind them are an iconic moment for your gallery. Just be sure to have cliff-climbing-friendly footwear around to catch these moments.

Fairmont Empress Honeymoon Rescue…Jordan and Oriana wed in Ontario during Covid. They had to cancel and plan their wedding several times before they tied the knot in a gorgeous ceremony.

They chose to come to British Columbia for their honeymoon. Unfortunately, their hotel reservations turned out to be, well…less than desirable. They packed up and called the West Coast Weddings magazine editor to ask where they should continue their honeymoon.

It happened to be a rough time on Vancouver Island to get a hotel room. So what to do? Just one phone call to Tracey Drake,  Director of Marketing and Communications at the Fairmont Empress, and soon a plan was in place. Tracey booked out a honeymoon suite at the hotel (Junior Harbour View Suite) and ensured that all the Fairmont Empress perks were in place for the couple.

Jordan and Oriana were pleasantly shocked to find out that they would be able to spend the rest of their honeymoon in Empress luxury. They were able to enjoy the views, the cuisine, and the Waterfront. What a wonderful ending to this story, and we are thrilled that the newlyweds went home with a great experience on Vancouver Island. Weddings on a Budget...Not too long ago, the bride’s family was responsible for funding the wedding. But that notion has lost its foothold, and now financial responsibility often falls onto the couple. This one special day can get very costly for young couples just starting in life. Luckily, there are plenty of options to keep the price tag of a wedding attainable and still have it meet the requirements of your dream wedding. Here are a few ideas to make your wallet happy.

Micro Wedding

The pandemic has thrown a wrench in the works for many people’s weddings, but the new trend that has come out of these times is the micro wedding. A micro wedding is a small, intimate affair that saves the couple a ton of money. Instead of a guest list of 100 or more and all the food, drinks, and entertainment that go along with it, many couples are sticking to inviting only immediate family and very close friends. They may choose to keep the traditional formal wedding attire or go semi-formal to casual. The ceremony and reception can be the same but on a smaller scale, or you could opt instead for something like a day of wine and pairings tastings at a vineyard followed by a small ceremony. With a smaller group, your options are greater.

Destination Wedding

While a destination wedding to a tropical resort may sound dreamy and expensive, they’re actually about one-third the cost of the average traditional wedding. Destination spots in Canada, such as Vancouver Island, specialize in accommodating guests for weddings and will often provide most of the elements needed for a wedding in your package. They provide you with your wedding planner, so you don’t have to worry about details during your trip. Plus, your wedding is one day of your vacation, and the rest is your honeymoon. Like micro weddings, you’ll have a smaller number of guests that can attend, but they will be paying their way. And many of your guests will stay for several days and celebrate the newly wedded couple the entire time. Don’t forget that a destination wedding can be within your own country, such as the beaches and rainforests of Vancouver Island.

DIY Wedding

Having a wedding can be very involved, so many brides choose to employ the help of a wedding planner to work out all of the details. However, you can save money by forgetting a wedding planner and utilizing family and friends to help pull everything together. Instead of hiring someone to decorate, you could make your creative decorations and table centerpieces. Simple options like mason jars with ribbons tied around them and pebbles thrown in the bottom make lovely candle holders or flower vases. And when thinking about venues, consider a public space like a park to host your wedding. Weddings on a budget do not have to look like you are on a budget!

Top 10 Reasons to Choose an Okanagan Destination Wedding by Liz Moore… there are so many fantastic reasons to choose a destination wedding in the Okanagan Valley.  Firstly, you’ll experience rolling hills and valleys filled with a lush green oasis of vineyards. Secondly, you’ll love the one-of-a-kind wedding venues found throughout the region. Thirdly, resorts boast the region’s best natural landscapes, including some of British Columbia’s best native artwork. And the list goes on and on. REASON 10 – Okanagan Dream Destination Weather

We know through experience brides often think of a peak summer wedding in the Okanagan. And yes, it is simply divine to marry during this time. Not to mention in July, Okanagan lavender is in full bloom and perfect for bridal bouquets! The summer encompasses lovely sun and heat and very little rain. It’s ideal for planning your outdoor wedding ceremony and reception.   Some parts of the Okanagan, such as Osoyoos, are located in the desert belt. Average temperatures are warmest in peak summer months. They are often reaching up to (35C) or (77F). Therefore sunset weddings are more suitable during this time.

REASON 9 – Off-Peak Season Pricing Perks

Let’s face it: The Okanagan Valley is a fantastic destination choice during the popular summer months. However, there are additional advantages to consider booking your wedding in the pre-or post-summer season. True, it’s a little more off-season as far as lake activities and sports. 

However, these times do make for overall more competitive hotel pricing.  And often, venue pricing becomes a little more reasonable in price point as well.  The added benefit is that your out-of-town guests can stay a bit longer. And enjoy an abundance of post-wedding festivities and tours.

REASON 8 – Easy Access from Western Canada and the US

Once you are in your designated area of the Okanagan, getting around this region is very easy. Highway 97 (The Okanagan Highway) is the main road that will take you straight from North Vernon to Southern Osoyoos. Many out-of-town guests may opt to fly into Kelowna International airport. And here there are lots of car rental options to choose from. Guests driving from Alberta and further East will find the highways both Southern and Northern also convenient for travel.

The resort’s gondola offers 22 kilometers of hiking trail splendor. Additionally, the high-speed chairlift accesses the bike park. Perfect for those action adventurists in your group. Kelowna hiking includes Knox Mountain, Angel Springs trail, just to name a few of the vast options here!

Wine tours 

Of course, you won’t want to miss booking a group tour of the spectacular vineyards that dot along the Okanagan valley. One of my favourite wine tour companies is Sip Happens Wine Tours. They are conveniently located in all central city locations in the Okanagan Valley. Tours run from April through to October.  Pretty much the entire wedding season! And best of all you can book a half-day or full-day tour. Most importantly, they can accommodate both smaller intimate and larger festive groups.

REASON 6 – LGBTQ Friendly 

Our LGBTQ community will love Kelowna and the surrounding area when it comes to exchanging their wedding vows. The Okanagan Valley warmly welcomes our same-sex wedding community. To note, same-sex weddings are legal throughout Canada.  And our LGBTQ community will feel entirely at ease while vacationing here. Keep in mind mid-June is usually when Kelowna celebrates Kelowna Pride. Therefore planning a June wedding in Kelowna can work out great for post-wedding fun in the Okanagan Sun!

Another of my favourite things to do while on your honeymoon is visiting Burrowing Owl Estate Winery. Especially if you are staying in the Osoyoos region, it’s just a quick drive from Osoyoos. Or better yet, rent bikes and take a leisurely ride over to experience some of the Okanagan’s best food and wine. Not to mention spectacular vineyard views!

The Okanagan region of British Columbia is truly one of the most spectacular areas in Canada.
