Urban Elopement at Fort Common | We love love love this highly stylish elopement inspiration in downtown Victoria. The couple are the epitome of the city wedding – the groom in his casual black tie with his sophisticated bride beside him. The palette is inspired by the photographer’s obsession with Reclamation and her wish to showcase the celestial gown in an urban mood.

Why the photographer’s obsession with this gown designer? Reclamation is a fascinating one woman show run by Trista, who promises to create one of a kind pieces. Her mantra is that all women are one and all gowns are meaningful, therefore, gowns should be reclaimed from the past. The dresses are artfully reclaimed and created with vintage and up cycled materials. She is known for remodeling gowns from mothers and grandmothers so that the history of the women in the family are represented into the future generation. Of course, this makes all of the gowns eco friendly! 

The gown used for this urban elopement feels like an angelic vibe with the light sheen and metallic shimmer. The  bell sleeves, the flowing skirt with high cut…it all leads to a sultry bridal look. The summer bouquet of pink, peach and purple garden roses and peonies pop against the gown – tied artfully with a pink ribbon. The attitude and feel of the city is the perfect backdrop to the beautiful couple.

An eco-friendly wedding show in Vancouver! The Cascadia Wedding Show, Canada’s only sustainable focused wedding show, is coming November 3rd to the Pipe Shop…last year some of the highlights for us were the style show and the amazing vendor displays that were seriously inspirational.

The only show with a lens to supporting local and focusing on sustainable practices. Cascadia Wedding Show wants to inspire you to create an ethical wedding – zero waste is a bonus! And to show you how to get what you want without breaking the bank.

Produced by Natasha Thom, event lead and founder of Clearwater Events & Weddings and her talented team. As a company, they have a clear mandate inspired by nature, passionate with supporting local, and obsessed with trying to curb the amount of waste events typically seem to create. They also have a giving back model, which allows us them to donate to local causes and provide pro bono services throughout the year.

This year, the Eco Friendly Wedding Show has expanded into the brand new Wallace Venue at the Shipyards! Be one of the first to visit this brand new venue while meeting one of the many great wedding professionals.

They have worked closely with Offsetters, Canada’s leading carbon management solutions provider, to understand the total carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas emissions and offset them by contributing to projects that prevent the equivalent amount of emissions.

Be aware that some restaurants require you to ‘buy out’ the evening to the tune of what the restaurant might lost for shutting down for your event. However, shop carefully. Other restaurants have purposely set aside an evening a week for weddings or prefer to have a wedding than an evening of normal clientele. Don’t assume you have to pay an outrageous ‘buy out’ to have a restaurant wedding.  Burdock & Co., featured in this editorial, actively seeks weddings – you will find restaurants who are looking for couples often have entire pages on their websites devoted to what they can offer. Upscale coffee shops that close early evenings are often thrilled to have events and allow you to bring in your own caterer. The best of both worlds!  And this idea is incredible for showers, engagement parties etc.

Black Rock Oceanfront Resort in Ucluelet hosted this beautiful wedding. Liz & Alex knew they wanted the perfect combination of Vancouver Island rainforest and beach and they found it!

It was bound to happen sooner or later…we are so happy that Liz & Alex are our first E-harmony couple! They bonded online over common interests and met finally, in person, at a coffee shop in Vancouver. Liz says the moment she saw Alex, and his smile at her, she knew he was the one.

As for the proposal, Alex was all over that. He carefully planned the moment on the Capilano suspension bridge but had not counted on Liz being afraid of the heights. As Alex desperately tried to get her to stop and pay attention at the perfect spot, Liz was equally desperate in her attempt to leave the bridge! Liz’s wish to flee came to a sudden halt when she caught a glimpse of the ring and quickly accepted Alex’s proposal.

Liz & Alex knew they wanted the perfect combination of Vancouver Island rainforest and beach for their wedding day.

When it came to planning their wedding, Liz and Alex found they had something else in common – a love for the beach.  So their decision to get married at Black Rock Oceanfront Resort in Ucluelet was an easy one for them.   The resort had the perfect combination of Vancouver Island rain forest and beach as well as the ocean view from the Wine Cellar.

When asked for their favorite moments of their wedding day both Alex and Liz had similar thoughts – their first glimpses of each other at the ceremony.  Liz answered, “Seeing Alex as I walked down the aisle and my parent’s first seeing me in my dress. Nothing can match the emotion”.  Alex was in the moment as well. “When I saw Liz walking down the cellar steps my heart stopped and I went into tunnel vision. I knew I was the luckiest man alive.”

Something Borrowed: A custom ring from Juvelisto which combined grandparents and parents wedding bands and birthstone rings – representing the love in the family as the grandparents and parents have been married a long time.

Décor Palette: Elements of the West Coast were the inspiration so ferns could be found everywhere including a beautiful live fern sweetheart table. A tree motif was used on the amazing ice luge, cookie favours and the invitation suite. Water elements were also used on tables and moss lined the ceremony aisle. The best part according to Alex & Liz? The West Coast s’mores bar!

Boho River Romance – A river romance among the majestic pines. This stunning forest boho editorial, along a river’s edge, is filled with eclectic details and beautiful flowers.  We loved the bridal gown, which couldn’t be more chic, plus a guitar playing groom which certainly adds to the bohemian feel!  Be sure to watch the lovely behind the scenes video.

The current trend of creating cozy and inviting seating tableau in field, forests and along beaches is showcased perfectly here. You can picture the bride and groom on the chairs with the fun pillows and eating their first meal as Mr. & Mrs. along the river bank. The charming yet varied mixture of decor and flowers creates a relaxed feeling while still retaining the importance of the event. Lots of eco love and details!! Drew and Marnie’s Vancouver Island Wedding is so beautiful – but what makes it special is how much thought and love for the environment went into the day. And support for local businesses. Drew and Marnie are very mindful of their decisions’ impact on the environment and where their purchases are made.

Marnie shares some of her inspiration for her Eco-friendly wedding:

“Weddings are a great opportunity to support local or more environmental initiatives. Yes, we could have saved a few bucks by picking more ‘made in China’ items, but we tried to steer away from that. The invitations set the tone. We created an oatmeal invitation with gentle ferns (our inspiration for the fern on the oatmeal wedding bags). The biodegradable invitation was a plantable card with wildflower seeds in it.

The wedding wasn’t without a footprint, however we try to make choices that minimize that.

We wanted to provide a usable ‘favour’ to our guests and say thank you for traveling to the wedding. The bags were designed and made by a tight group of friends of my mom’s. They banded together to design, make, and even add a fern design to the reusable welcome bag. The soaps inside were inspired by the ocean and made by another friend of my mom’s. The blackberry jam was picked by a friend from my mom’s yard, and mini mason jars of jam were made with love.

Drew’s mom spent weeks baking cookies, making bits and bites, and making cheese treats so our guests could have something to snack on. The apples in the bags were also from BC. The fruit was chosen because it was in season, and both our communities contributed.

Marnie had family and her planner who went foraging for moss and ferns the day before the wedding. When the night was done, they were simply tossed back into their natural environment to biodegrade and start over.

The Vancouver Island wedding wasn’t without a footprint; however, we tried to make choices that minimized that.”
