Romantic Black Lace and Dramatic Floral showcase hints of gold and a gorgeous cake!  Olivia, of Lavish Engagements, was inspired by an out of this world black lace gown at The Bride’s Closet. She teamed up with Thrifty Foods Comox to showcase this beauty with lush yet bold floral design and wedding cake.

The bride wears this one of a kind black wedding dress with perfection. The fitted lace flares with a small train and scoop neck is an inspiring gown for a unique and stylish bride. The groom rocks a formal look and wears a boutonniere made of calla lily and greenery.

The floral design is the star of the show with beautiful lilies and roses in dramatic hues. This is a perfect way to showcase floral at an intimate wedding. The more flowers the more the occasion feels special! So we see flowers dripping from above the stone wall backdrop and all around the wedding cake. The lovely pink peonies, eucalyptus, blue thistle and ‘black’ calla lilies are breath taking. The table settings of black edged plates with fern leaf on each black napkin and black cutlery is the epitome of sophistication.

Dessert Tables are one of the best part of weddings and this one with gorgeous greenery and sweet cakes tops it all. So much goodness and fun! Cakes, cupcakes, cake pops, doughnuts and lots of other yumminess are found on all the best wedding dessert tables.  To top it all off, it won Best Dessert Table at the 2017 Vancouver Island Wedding Awards!

This dessertscape was a surprise gift for the bride and groom. Cake Designer, Laura of Schur to Please Boutique Cakery, and Tammy of Blue Lily Event Planning, put their heads together to create this amazing  West Coast Boho Chic look. The glassware and barrels were provided by Decorate Victoria and Laura Kalcsa put together the garlands that were draped across the table. Element Photo Co. captured all the details including the paper suite by Tickle Tree Stationery + Design.

The beauty of this tablescape is it’s white iced cakes, cupcakes and pops sitting on glassware and surrounded by white roses. The warmth of candlelight made for a pleasing scent from the greenery and roses. The lovely fountain and landscaping of Olympic View Golf Course served as the perfect backdrop.

The tablescape was designed to be added to the reception décor provided by Decorate Victoria. Boho chic and lush florals were showcased  with blush pink and gold centerpieces highlighted by vintage lights which were strung behind the head table.  Succulents were randomly placed on the tables and served as giveaways to guests. The piece de résistance – the 26′ live edged head table which included 300 roses and 600 foliage stems!

Family Heirloom Included with Cakes!

The lovely lace gracing the middle of the tablescape is a piece of linen tatting that was provided by the bride’s grandmother. The original piece was handmade in 1861 by the bride’s great great grandmother.

A Modern Cake + Goodie Touch

It is an interesting touch to have antique linens alongside Tim Horton’s timbits!  The table designer was careful to only choose timbits that were the correct colour and texture to match the cakes and cupcakes colour palette. The ultimate in Canadian wedding touches, eh?

English Inn Wedding Infused with Stunning Fall Colours is filled with delicate hints of whimsy. This stunning fall Vancouver Island wedding shoot that betrays a love of all things simple. The English Inn has all the comforts of the modern world but, with it’s architecture, harkens to days gone by. The Inn hosts many weddings each year and the moated gazebo with tall pillars provides the perfect setting for a romantic reception. We look forward to seeing the future changes to this wonderful venue.

Laura, at Caribou Creative, dreamed up the navy, gold, and ivory suite with gold lining and laser cut lace detail. The deep blue linen paired with a plum runner is a nod to the change of seasons while the lush greenery and white hydrangeas acknowledge the summer that is passing. The gold shimmer accents add a touch of whimsy that is reflected in the charger plates, champagne napkins, gold cutlery and the cake pedestal. The lanterns added to the romantic tone with lit candles. Topping the cake is a pair of pears which serves as an amusing pun! and was created with love by Laura of Schur to Please boutique cakery.

The first dress bride Sonora is wearing is reminiscent of what an English Rose would wear with it’s blush tone. The second dress, a strapless beaded, chiffon complemented by gold necklace and matching earrings reflects the hints of gold in our decor. Marian, from Kenmar Flower Farm, created the bouquet with dazzling mondial roses, burgundy dianthus, and viburnum berry with an ivory ribbon.

Sonora’s hair is styled with loose curls and partially pinned back to show off her beautiful cheekbones. Erin Bradley accented her features with a smokey eye in browns and plums for the fall theme and finished with a peach toned lip.

The groom, Tyler, wore a heather grey suit with a deep purple lining. Outlooks by Men provided a plum bow tie and navy vest over a white, crisp shirt. The boutonniere mirrors the bouquet with a single mondial rose and burgundy dianthus. This English Inn Wedding infused with stunning fall colours is full of beauty and love!

A sublime celebration! We love the stylish details and the modern touches that make this Comox Valley wedding editorial truly beautiful. Chanel, of Sublime Celebrations, saw the stunning harvest table and it quickly became her muse. This inspiration moved her to use contrasting colours, old world vintage and the natural elements to showcase earth tones.

One of the more fascinating touches in this editorial is the modern twist of a black wedding cake and the bar.  Chanel commented on the masculine flare, “With more grooms getting involved in the décor and details of the wedding planning, nothing says groom appreciation like a scotch and gin bar!”

There are also plenty of very original design features such as the elegant wedding stationery, the keepsake bouquet, the leaves on the vintage plates and the compass favours to tie together the old world theme

Helpful Hints – Choosing Your Wedding Cake

Congrats! You’re getting married.  You’ve picked your date, and now the real fun starts.  Colors, themes, dresses, photographer, the venue…and cake! For many, choosing your cake means the best thing ever – cake tasting.  The cake is the one wedding choice everyone is willing to help you with until the nitty-gritty decisions start.  The number of layers, naked or iced, fondant or buttercream.  It can quickly go from fun to stressful.  That’s where the cake professionals come in to help you along.  They can help you figure out what kind of cake will be the best fit for your day and take all your cake worries off your plate.  The last thing you want to worry about on your wedding day is your cake, so here are some helpful hints to choosing your professional cake vendor.

Book in Advance

The respected and talented cake vendors are usually booked up to a year, especially during the wedding-season (May-September). If it is a single baker, find out if your cake will be frozen before delivery or if it will be fresh.  A great question to ask your vendor: How many other cakes will you schedule for that day? You will want to ensure that the number is as low as possible.

Know Your Budget

Have your budget in mind before your email or call.  Sharing your budget upfront will be most helpful in narrowing your choices. There is a range of cake vendors to suit almost any budget. You can spend hundreds or thousands, with most typical wedding cakes being in the range of $250-$1500.  A great question to ask: What recommendations do you have to maximize our budget?

Vendor Style

Choose a cake professional that specializes in the style of cake you’re looking for, and that can create your vision. Share some pictures with your potential cake vendor (Pinterest is your friend!) and ask them to show you cakes that they have done that may be similar. Please show them your invite, colors, theme, and décor choices and ask for their ideas.  Great Question to ask: What can they do to make your cake unique to you and your fiancé?

Design Quality

Now that you have a style in mind consider the design quality.  Will the cake vendor be able to deliver on the details? For example, if your cake will be displayed outdoors, you will likely want fondant icing for food safety.  If you are requesting flowers on your cake (a cost-effective design idea), ensure that your vendor is using food-safe flowers and properly attached, so they do not wilt.  A great question to ask: Do you have previous wedding cake photos for me to see?

Size Does Matter!

Your cake professional can help you with sizing once you know approximately how many guests will be eating the cake. Many venues/caterers serve dessert as part of the wedding meal – so less cake will be required. There is always the traditional three-tiered wedding cake but consider everything from a cake and candy dessert buffet to cupcakes, pies, groom’s cake, individual cakes, and sweets, or any combination.  If you are having a smaller wedding but like the look of a large cake, ask for some of the tiers to be faux. A great question to ask: What do they recommend for a group this size?

You’ll want to choose a cake that not only looks great but tastes amazing, so take the time to sample for flavour options. This will also allow you to meet your baker and talk about your wedding cake. If you have a larger, diverse group of guests, be sure that you choose a cake vendor that can deal with gluten, dairy, or peanut-free allergies. A great question to ask: Where do they source their ingredients?

It’s All in the Delivery

The number one reason wedding cakes fail is that there is damage during transport. Don’t take on the responsibility yourself to save money – it’s not worth it! You want to choose a cake vendor that includes cake delivery as part of their services. The right cake professional will ensure that the cake is properly boxed, safe, and set up on time for your wedding day. Be sure to provide your cake vendor with details on where the cake is set up and how long it will be sitting out before serving. A great question to ask: How will the wedding cake be delivered?

The Fine Print

Your cake vendor should provide you with a quote and cake contract outlining exactly what is included, how refunds and cancellations work, and their guarantee. Does their quote include florals, cake toppers, delivery, cake platter, serving utensils, flavors, and fillings of your choice, take-home boxes for leftovers, top tier packaged for the first anniversary, etc.? A great question to ask: What’s not included?

Look for the Trust

Be sure to work with vendors that are credible and reliable.  Ask your venue, wedding planner, or other wedding professionals who they recommend as a cake vendor. Here is a list of Vancouver Island cake vendors to help you get started.

This LGBTQ wedding editorial showcases a gorgeous and elegant look filled with black tie detail. Gold, black and white colours showcase the palette along with unique features such as the gold compass and striped linens. 

Olivia, from Lavish Engagements, styled this editorial shoot and shared her inspiration: 

“When I started planning the design for this styled shoot I knew I wanted it to be very masculine. Everything from the flowers to the backdrops were all designed to be completely black and white. The gold accents though brought my vision to life as it made for an elegant yet classic look. The palette is simple but powerful. The flowers were mostly black & white satin calla lilies and textural greens. I was over the moon with happiness when I saw the boutonnieres with black calla lilies as it was such a unique feature.”

“When I start to pull the design together for a real wedding I always start by figuring out what will capture the couple’s personality and showcase their style.  So right from the start I play around with the design. I always look for something unique for the table, something that you usually wouldn’t see on a table. In this editorial it turned out to be the gold compass.”

Olivia has seen couples go through everything so she has some thoughts on what they should do. “My advice for couples planning their wedding is to just start playing around and see what you like. Remember, this is supposed to be fun!  Although sites like Pinterest are a great tool for couples, I recommend that once you have found that inspiration look online, close out of it, pop into a local rental company and have some fun creating a mock table setting.”

We couldn’t top this classic vintage Vancouver Island English garden wedding editorial on the beautiful grounds of the former English Inn in Victoria.
